Student Recruitment and Outreach
We work with colleges and schools to support students applying for and entering higher education

The Recruitment and Outreach team are dedicated to delivering a wide range of activities, workshops, visits and support for students and their schools and colleges.
We support students who are looking to apply for higher education, whilst providing in-depth information on our University and what makes us a unique place to learn and grow.
We've put together a variety of help and support for all those involved in a student's application process. From tips and tricks on how to stand out for students, to guides and timelines for parents/carers to know the next stages in their child's education; here you will find all the information you will need to help your student make their university choice.

Talks and Workshops
The Outreach team are delighted to be able to offer a wide range of talks, workshops and taster sessions that can be presented both on and off our campus.
These are designed to engage students from year 7 to year 13 in thinking about their Higher Education journey, discussing what to expect during application and giving an insight into what it's like to be a student.
Academic Tasters
We have worked closely with our academics to provide Academic Taster sessions for schools, colleges and soon-to-be applicants to book.
These sessions are designed to give students an insight into life as a University of 黑洞社区 student and what to expect from Higher Education. They will also provide a first-hand experience of lessons and topics we cover within our courses.
These fun and engaging sessions are a great way to learn more about a student's subject of interest and to open their mind to the possible pathways they could take within their fields.

Topic: Health, Sports, Wellbeing
Description: In this session, students will be given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in administering routine health checks typically implemented by Exercise Physiologists employed in clinical settings. Such tests may be used to highlight certain health issues such as hypertension, pulmonary diseases and poor cardiovascular fitness. The tests completed will include:
鈥 Blood Pressure Test
鈥 Body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis
鈥 Lung Function Test
鈥 Sub Maximal Fitness Test (including heart rate)
All data will be interpreted and evaluated and comparisons against normative values will be made.
Length of session: 45 minutes to 1 hour
Number of participants: 10-25
Year group: Year 11+
Requires: Internet Connection, Group Tables, Presentation Facilities, Printing Facilities, Sports hall or large practical space
Topic: Sports Anaerobic Capacity
Description: High-intensity exercise may benefit from the ability to postpone fatigue, i.e. the ability to maintain a high power output.
The maintenance of a high power output during exercise is linked with an individual鈥檚 anaerobic capacity, i.e. the amount of energy (Adenosine Triphosphate) available from anaerobic energy sources (ATP-PCr System and the Glycolytic System).
In this session we will collect data during a 30s cycling-based anaerobic test: the Wingate anaerobic test. The Wingate anaerobic test is one of the most widely used laboratory tests employed to measure an individual鈥檚 ability to perform high-intensity exercise.
The data generated will allow for an evaluation of the power profile generated by individuals with different training histories and open up discussions relating to the interaction of energy systems during high-intensity exercise.
Length of session: 45 minutes to 1 hour
Number of participants: 10-25
Year group: Year 11+
Requires: Internet Connection, Group Tables, Presentation Facilities, Printing Facilities, Sports hall or large practical space
Topic: Applied Biomechanics, Sports, Health
Description:
Aims:
鈥 To provide students with an understanding of what applied biomechanics and what the biomechanist does
鈥 To provide students with an understanding of how their body interacts with gravity
鈥 To provide students with practical examples of how they control their movement to overcome gravity by applying force
Activities:
鈥 Introduction to the force plate, its software, and important set-up steps
鈥 Record student height (at least 3 times), calculate an average and collate this information
鈥 Force plate task 1 - Resisting gravity: How still can you stand while gravity tries to pull you to the ground?
鈥 Force plate task 2 - Fighting gravity: How quickly can you squat
鈥 Force plate task 3 - Overcoming gravity: How high can you jump?
